Texas Waterfowl Habitat
North Texas is an amazing area for waterfowl observation and hunting. There are hundreds of accessible acres where these birds are nesting and breeding in isolation and a dream for duck or other waterfowl lovers. This is an excellent trip for those that are into nature photography as many other animals are also seen on these excursions.
This two or five day experience takes you to Northern Texas where you will stay in one of the many ranches in the area and take day trips to waterfowl country. You will be accompanied by a guide and all gear will be provided including:
- Chest waders
- High powered binoculars
- Camouflage waterproof jackets
- High quality rubber boots
- Wooden duck decoys – used to attract the ducks
- Duck Commander duck calls
- Camouflage blinds
Your guide will teach you to use your duck call as well as instruct you on how to attract the waterfowl with your duck decoys and blinds. You will be thrilled as you lay in your hunting blind and have ducks of all types descend onto your area. There will be many opportunities for amazing photos as the birds fly in and out of the area.
Some of the birds you will see include:
- Wood ducks
- Mallard ducks
- Canada Goose
- Cinnamon Teal
- Hooded Merganser
- Bald Eagles
- Turkey Vulture
- and much more…
Obviously there is no guarantee that you will see each of these birds during your trip, but you are sure to see dozens of different types while out on your trek. If there is a particular type that you wish to see, make sure to find out if it is the right season before booking your trip. Many birds only come for a short time so check their migration habits and book accordingly.
Waterfowl Photography and Hunting
Some of our clients have also hired photographers in the area to join them on their trips to give them photography lessons and tips on how to best capture these birds and their natural environment. There have been some amazing photos captured on these trips and who better to learn from than award-winning photographers.
If you wish, you can also take duck hunting lessons where you will be shown how to effectively hunt ducks. Hunting guides will take you for a day trip in the hunting season to some of the best waterfowl hunting grounds in the nation. You will learn to attract, shoot, clean and even eat your catch. This part of the trip is obviously not for everyone, but is an option for those who are interested.
What to Expect At the Ranch
Back at the ranch you will be treated to fine Texas meals and hospitality. You will have access to all areas of the ranch including the horses and cattle. You can ride one of the tame ponies or even take a horse on a cattle run if the mood suits you.
Overnight trips are also done from the ranch where you can stay out amongst the stars just like the cowboys of old. After tracking and herding the cattle during the day you can sit by the camp fire at night and cook some traditional cowboy food and take in the natural beauty of Northern Texas. This is a popular choice with our returning guests.
